Losing Sleep, Losing Brain?

People who are chronically stressed and insomniacs have a smaller cingulate gyrus and hippocampus than those who sleep normally and have are able to handle stress. The more severe the sleep or stress problem, the greater the loss of grey brain matter.

Does the stress and insomnia lead to a loss of grey mattter or does the fact one has less grey matter than normal cause the insomnia and inability to handle stress?
