Long-Term Use of Osteoporosis Drug May Cause Bone Fractures

Patients taking Fosamax, a drug that was designed to help protect against osteoporosis, is increasingly being linked with bone fractures. There are better ways to build bone strength. Bone is not static like stone as some people think. Bone is constantly breaking down and remodeling. There are specific bone cells which perform each of these functions.

Bone can be weakened in both men and women due to changing hormone levels . Bone can also be weakened in people who have a low body pH, or in other words have systemic acidity. People may have low pH due to poor dietary choices, stress, environmental toxins, and inactivity. Colas will pull calcium from the bone as will all high acid foods like excessive meat, grains, and sugars.

To build healthy bone most people think calcium, especially from dairy. This is not your best choice and especially not from Tums, an antacid that bills itself as a calcium supplement. Calcium is best absorbed in the stomach, which has a normal pH of about 2. That's VERY acid! An anti-acid like Tums is exactly the opposite of what's needed for calcium absorption.

Your best bet to maintain healthy bone is to start off with a good bone mass in adulthood. Do this by weight bearing exercise, even walking. Sleep 7 hours a night. Modify your stress. Eliminate Colas and go easy on your consumption of high acid foods. According to Dr. Balch's Prescription for Nutritional Healing eat plenty of dark leafy greens, broccoli, chestnuts, dandelion greens, flounder, hazelnuts, kale, kelp, molasses, oats, salmon, sardines, sesame seeds, tahini, turnip greens, and wheat germ.  Be sure to include food high in sulfur content like garlic, onions, and eggs.

Make sure to take a quality supplement with a wide array of mineral, not just calcium.  Your supplement/s should include calcium, magnesium, boron, silica, B Vitamins and Vitamins A, C, D, E, K.

Many calcium supplements are nothing more than chalk also known as calcium carbonate (found in Tums along with neurotoxic aluminum).  Stay away from this!  I prescribe calcium citrate for patients.  One excellent product I use is Osteo-B-Plus from Biotics Labs.  This is only available by prescription.

This is great stuff! With ADHD patients it's important to check both sides of the brain for function. Since there are two cerebral hemispheres they may be functioning on different levels. If medications are given it will bring total brain activity down. The problem is that it will not only bring down the problem side but it will also bring down the good side. The idea is to increase function of the problem side while maintaining the level of function of the good side. Brilliant! This can be down with exercises specific to the problem side of the brain.

Tremors disappeared after a visit to the chiropractor

NBC NEWS CHANNEL 30 - Another life changed! 3 year-old Tray Wainman was suffering from daily muscle twitches and tremors. The medical doctors have not medical explanation what was wrong with Tray. After a visit to the chiropractor the tremors disappeared. Chiropractors ...work with the nervous system. Chiropractic is based on the premise that the body is a
self-healing and self-regulating organism and the nervous system is the master control of all the systems in the human body. Anything that interferes with normal nerve function, like a subluxation, is bad.

Anything that reduces disturbance in the nervous system, like an adjustment, is good. Chiropractors are the only ones qualified to locate and correct nerve interference.

HOSPITAL acronym for 8 inefficiencies in Healthcare

I created this acronym to help folks in the Healthcare environment recall the 8 inefficiencies that exist in all medical facilities. There are a few medical facilities, such as Miami Children’s Hospital and Baystate Medical that are using this … I’m wondering which others are also using.

We briefly review this during our free Online Healthcare White Belt Program … at www.Lean2020.com I thought I’d share here as well.

H = Halting or waiting. Patients wait in “Waiting Rooms”, doctors and nurses wait for test results, organizations wait for payments … the list goes on.
O = Overproducing. Data is entered in multiple locations/databases, extra tests are performed (defensive medicine), and patient information is written in multiple places.
S = Slips or errors. Miscommunication, medicine errors, data loss/errors
P = Processes which are non value added. Redoing X-Rays or Lab tests, Triage, writing prescriptions.
I = Inventory. Too much inventory is costly, running out causes other issues, too many patients is also a form of inventory.
T = Transportation. Movement of patients from one area to another, chasing approvals (transportation of a requisition), data hand-offs.
A = Action or motion. The physical movement within an area (not moving a patient or thing through the process) … going to make a copy, searching for a patient’s chart, locating supplies or equipment (bed linen, pill crushers, etc.)
L = Lack of employee engagement. Failure to engage the workforce in solving problems. Not educating, including on teams, or soliciting ideas to address issues.

Lean is about identifying, then reducing/eliminating these inefficiencies. I’d welcome feedback and thoughts about this. I’m certain that this group could list many more examples of each of these … finding the issues is a big part of resolving them.

Gut health linked to excessive weight gain during pregnancy

People still don't know what probiotics are. We all know about antibiotics though. So what do those words mean? "Pro" means "for" or "in favor of" and "biotics" comes from "bios" meaning life. Of course we know what "anti" means. We usually take antibiotics when we have a bacterial infection, hence they are against life in order to kill the offending bacteria. On the other side of the coin we have our probiotics, something in favor of life. So what are probiotics? They are essentially "good bugs" that colonize your digestive tract and they're critically important to your health!

About 80% of the immune system is located in the GI tract! Did you know that? Probiotics play a huge role in immunity and detoxification of the body. They can be easily depleted due to taking antibiotics, drinking chlorinated water, stress, poor sleep and dietary habits, and environmental toxins.

Most people today must be on a good probiotic formula in order to recolonize the gut.

In this study pregnant women with good levels of beneficial probiotics gained less weight than those who did not. Those who gained more weight during pregnancy had higher levels of the E. coli, a bacteria abundantly present in feces.

A Common Herbicide Turns Some Male Frogs into Females: Scientific American

This is very much a human problem. Men and boys are increasingly suffering the effects of estrogenization. Male fertility is declining. 100% of the human population is affected by endogenous toxins. Plastics and a pharmaceutical soup are in our water supplies. The air and soil are also dumped on with hundreds of thousands of tons of chemicals and pollutants every year. The human body often has no way to break these toxins down so they either circulate perpetually or get stuffed in joints and fatty tissue. Think brain problems today. Think about the rise in brain related diseases and breast cancer, both largely fatty tissue. Think cancers and auto-immune diseases.

It is imperative for everyone of us to do whatever we can to detox. Avoid chemicals as best as possible. Look into a detox diet and nutrients.

Suffocating head lice works in new treatment

People have tried many ways to kill head lice including attempted suffocation with various oils like mayonnaise and petroleum oil. Lice are remarkably well equipped to combat this treatment. They simply take a deep breathe and batten down the hatches by closing their spiracles, the entry point to their breathing system. In the meantime they have become resistant to the many drug treatments that have been thrown at them.

But now a new way to suffocate them has been developed and it's 92% effective. Even better it's non-toxic. By using benzyl alcohol lotion stuns the spiracles and prevents them from closing. This allows mineral oil and other ingredients to enter their breathing apparatus and kill them.

New Synthetic Magnesium Supplement Improves Memory And Staves Off Age-Related Memory Loss

Researchers have developed a new form of magnesium. What's so special about it? This one crosses the blood brain barrier, a selective barrier the brain uses to keep certain molecules out. We want magnesium in our brains to promote plasticity and boost brain function. Most of us are magnesium deficient and most magnesium supplements today are not worth much im comparison to this new form.

This new magnesium has not yet hit the market. In the meantime get it the old fashioned way " by eating lots of green leaves, broccoli, almonds, cashews and fruit."

Debug Yourself Naturally

An excellent article on improving your immune system.

Ronald Goldman, MD, co-founder of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine: "Chronic infection is a vastly underestimated cause of disease and disability. The public needs to be mindful that low-grade infections are estimated to potentially reduce the healthy human lifespan by up to 20 years, robbing them of a lifetime of bountiful energy, productivity, and happiness. Bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites may well be the single most important yet undiscovered cause of premature aging and the chronic degenerative disorders of aging that now plague Americans."

Artificially sweetened diet drinks also raise insulin levels and provoke the pancreas, maybe even more than sugared beverages. Sweeteners like Sucralose are far sweeter than sugar and trigger huge releases of insulin. Insulin, besides regulating blood sugar, also is a fat storage hormone. The more insulin you have in blood circulation the fatter you'll be. That's the cruel joke of "diet" drinks. When was the last time you saw someone lose weight drinking diet soda?

New Treatment For Chronic Pain Condition

Here's a very interesting study involving pain. Patients usually are driven into the office by some sort of pain or discomfort. They often logically ask how long it will be before they feel better. This is difficult to say for me as the doctor for many reasons. Sure I could spit out some statistics but I prefer to view everyone as a unique individual. Everyone will have a different response unique to themselves.

According to this study some pain patients will experience pain so severe after the injury has healed that they request amputation of a limb! And even then the pain does not leave with pain medications being no help either.

This study backs up the most difficult lesson I try to teach my patients. Pain is not an indication of what sort of condition you're in. One could be healed of an injury and be in tremendous pain. Or one could be totally pain free and have an insidious cancer growing inside of them.

What you should be most concerned about is function. To find out how you're functioning you need to work with someone who knows how to evaluate and demonstrate your function to you. This will tell you where you're currently holding and where you might be headed. You will be able to notice immediate differences.

Use of potentially harmful chemicals kept secret under law - washingtonpost.com

*84,000 chemicals in commercial use in the United States.
*Nearly 20 percent are secret.
*About 700 chemicals are introduced annually.
*"...many pose a "substantial risk" to public health or the environment."
*Of the secret chemicals, 151 are made in quantities of more than 1 million tons a year and 10 are used specifically in children's products, according to the EPA.

These chemicals are produced and emitted into the environment and our households in the hundreds of millions of tons annually. They can be found at the most fundamental stages of life; in our air, water, soil, and of course food. 100% of the human population carries these toxins. Even the cord blood of newborns has tested positive for a wide array of toxins.

These chemicals can be the source of the increase of a wide variety of otherwise unexplained ailments; hormonal and neurotransmitter problems such as ADD, anxiety, insomnia, and depression; cognitive decline such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's; autoimmune disorders, digestive problems, organ failure, blood sugar disorders, cancer, and the list goes on.

It is imperative for everyone of us to seek out a detoxification program by using diet, nutrition, exercise, and other methods under the guidance of a doctor with experience in this field.

The Integrative Health Center provides such a service locally in Israel and by phone consult to anywhere in the U.S. Please see the contact page for further info.

People who are chronically stressed and insomniacs have a smaller cingulate gyrus and hippocampus than those who sleep normally and have are able to handle stress. The more severe the sleep or stress problem, the greater the loss of grey brain matter.

Does the stress and insomnia lead to a loss of grey mattter or does the fact one has less grey matter than normal cause the insomnia and inability to handle stress?

Magnesium May Improve Memory

Without adequate minerals in the body vitamins are useless. Minerals serve as cofactors which means that they help the vitamins go and do their thing in enzymatic reactions. According to this article and study only 32 % of Americans get adequate magnesium.

Magnesium is an extremely important mineral. It is an invaluable factor in nerve transmission, aids in the balance of acid and alkaline (pH), prevents calcification of soft tissue, and protects arterial walls from surges in high blood pressure. Magnesium is a major player in cardiac function, helping to maintain cardiac rhythm. In fact many fatal cardiac arrythmias are due to Mg deficiency. A Mg deficiency can also mimic diabetes.

Fortunately Mg is found in most founds, especially dairy, meat, fish, and seafood. Many other foods and herbs contain Mg. You almost can't miss getting it in your diet.

So how could so many people have a deficiency you ask? Excess alcohol, diuretic drugs, flouride and high levels of zinc and Vitamin D could deplete Mg levels. Foods high in oxalic acid also block Mg: almonds, chard, cocoa, rhubarb, spinach, and tea. These are all healthy and good foods, but if you have a Mg defiency you need to minimize these.

How would you know if you're Mg deficient? The best test is an intracellular Mg screen, also called mononuclear cell.

It's best to find a qualified nutritionist to help evaluate and guide you in this area.

The Scales Can Lie: Hidden Fat

Can a person be of normal weight and appearance and still be clinically obese? The answer is yes according to this provocative study.

Mayo clinic researchers have applied a new term to this condition: normal weight obesity. If you're ready to throw up your arms and toss in the towel out of frustration just take a breath, relax, and read on. It makes sense.

Most of us are concerned with total body weight as measured by the traditional bathroom scale. This is not an accurate assessment of your condition since it is only a measure of all that you weigh. A far better gauge is some type of body composition, meaning muscle and fat. Researchers discovered people who had normal weight and appearance for their size and frame but their ratio of muscle to fat was low. These people are at the same risks for heart disease, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome ( a pre-diabetic condition) as their apparently obese counterparts.

My advice is to get your body composition measured. You can do this at some doctor's offices, gyms and health clubs, or even in the comfort of your own home. I use a scale from Tanita to check our family body composition.

Once you know your body composition then you can get to work on a diet and fitness program. Get your doctor's OK first and find something you can live with. Even walking can be great if you sit all day. You don't need to join a gym but do so if it helps you be organized and committed. You should be doing something to build muscle and also increase metabolism with aerobic exercise.

Remember that muscle weighs more than fat so if you're doing weight bearing exercises and build muscle you may gain weight. Not to worry since this muscle has a higher metabolic rate than fat and is therefore protective. You want to increase your muscle mass! You don't have to look like a bodybuilder!

Be fit, not fat!

Kids' Chest Infections Up Since Vaccine

Do the first two paragraphs in this story make sense?

Jan. 19, 2010 - Childhood pneumococcal vaccination may be linked to an increase in a serious complication of pneumonia, a new study suggests.

The proven benefit of the vaccine -- which since its introduction in 2000 has slashed rates of pneumonia, bacterial meningitis, and blood infections in children -- far outweighs this possible risk.

Children are getting pneumonia from the pneumonia vaccine but authorities state that the vaccine helps. Is that pretzel logic?

Chemicals coat apples decades after Alar scare - Yahoo! News

What can we do when healthy foods like apples become a health hazard from applied chemicals such as Alar? The best advice is the either scrub the skins thoroughly, peel the skins, or buy local certified organic if you can.

Alar coated apples are a classic example of what is called bioaccumulation. This means that over time chronically being exposed to small doses of poison will eventually catch up with you. The liver has no enzymes to break these chemicals down and they will continuously circulate through the blood or get stored in fat and joints. Over the decades of life they will keep accumulating in the body with more exposure to polluted air, water, soil, and food.

Industrial chemicals, food additives and pesticides, heavy metals, plastics, and more are part of life today. It is critical for all of us to take measures to protect as much as possible against these harmful toxins.

1)Drink a liter of water for every 100 lbs body weight daily.
2)Sleep 7 hours
3) Eat organic & scrub food
4) Do a supervised detox program with a professional
5) Move! Exercise and stretch!
6) Practice deep breathing, visualization, and relaxation techniques

Nutrients stimulate brain connections, could treat Alzheimer's

Research out of MIT says that a 3 ingredient nutrient cocktail can stimulate the growth of new connections in the brain, thus helping Alzheimer's patients. The scientists tested the effects of DHA, uridine, and choline, all of which are building blocks of fatty molecules "that make up brain cell membranes which form synapses." Synapses are the brain's connections from one neuron to another.

There are other nutrients which are known for brain health; acetylcholine, phosphatidylcholine, NAC, and glutathione are a few very important brain nutrients.

Sleep Debt Hard to Repay

Sleep is an area of health that impacts so many others.  Most of us do not sleep enough.  The average recommendation is for 7 hours nightly.  You should have a good mattress and pillow and your bedroom should only be used for sleeping.  No food, music, or TV.  Make sure the room is very dark and be sure to cover the digital clock display as well.  Have some wind down time from your daily activities.  Deep breathing is a good relaxation technique.

Chronic lack of sleep is a major stress on the body.  There was a recent study directly linking stress with cancer.  Think about it!  Meet your future in good health!

Late-night teens 'face greater depression risk'

Not just teens, but everyone face all sorts of problems from not getting enough sleep, and these days not many of us sleep enough. Sleep deprivation causes hormonal imbalances and affects us physically, mentally, and spiritually. Obesity, diabetes, depression, and more have been attributed to regularly not getting en...ough sleep. The optimal amount of sleep is 7 hours per night for most people.

Getting regular exercise is the other side of the coin. This stimulates brain function and the natural pharmacy we have. Motion is life! Move and then rest for optimal function and aging.

Rate of Autism Disorders Climbs to One Percent Among 8-year-olds

The rate of autism in children is on the rise and no one seems to know conclusively what causes it. There are many theories including genetic links, environmental factors, and vaccinations. What is alarming is that now 1 in 110 U.S. children have been classified with ASD or related disorders. This is a 57% increase from only 4 years earlier.

My personal belief based upon clinical knowledge and experience is that the source of this problem is primarily from an external source, and that source is environmental toxins and possibly the additives in vaccines. We know what is being pumped into the air, water, and soil in unprecedented amounts. Tons of industrial waste, pesticides, solvents, plastics, heavy metals, raw sewage, and pharmaceuticals are now in our food and water supply. Crops are grown with genetic modifications in soil fertilized with human sewage and irrigated with water containing and wide slew of toxicants including a stew of prescription drugs.

A wide range of toxins, totaling nearly 300, was found in the cord blood of newborns. The baby has already been exposed to the mother's toxins. After birth it will suckle mother's milk from a breast most likely filled with toxins. Breast tissue is mainly fatty and that's where the body stores toxins. Most likely mom uses an antiperspirant containing aluminum and this easily transfers to the breast. If the baby takes formula then it gets a whopping dose of fructose which was found to contain mercury.

Next baby gets his vaccinations. There is a lot of controversy and denial of any link between vaccines and autism but one thing is very clear. The levels of mercury in vaccines far exceed the dose which the CDC deems as safe. While there may not be a absolute direct link logic dictates that this is a potentially dangerous scenario. Also take into consideration the load of multiple doses of vaccine.

One answer is for parents to undergo an exam and detoxification program before getting pregnant. Children can also benefit from this program whether or not they have ASD or a related condition.

My office offers this service. Please be in touch for more information.

CTV News | The Liberation Treatment: A whole new approach to MS

A new study and theory of the cause of MS has led scientists to the discovery that excess pooled iron in the brain could be the cause. Based upon these findings a new diagnosis and surgical treatment has been devised.

Before trying surgery try these tips and strongly consider spinal manipulation to correct improper spinal curvatures. The chiropractic adjustment provides three major functions:

1) Puts a quick stretch in the muscle. This helps spastic muscles relax through a neurofeedback loop.

2) Restores Range of Motion to the joints

3) Provides a barrage of info to the brain via activation of joint mechanoreceptors

These 3 benefits of the adjustment can help the smooth muscle of the blood vessels to relax. It also has a profound effect on the autonomic nervous system, meaning relaxation of smooth muscle (e.g. veins) and increased blood flow. Restoration of normal spinal biomechanics and supporting soft tissue structures can go a long way in helping many health problems. Hans Selye stated that postural deformities are the beginning of the disease process.

Men Are From Mars -- Neuroscientists Find That Men And Women Respond Differently To Stress

Male and female brains respond differently to stress. Men go into fight or flight mode and women respond emotionally. This can effect how treatment is geared for different people.

Here is the most important part of the article. Read just this if you don't want to read the whole piece:

"FIGHT OR FLIGHT: Certain events act as "stressors," triggering the nervous system to produce hormones to respond to the perceived danger. Specifically, the adrenal glands produce more adrenaline and cortisol, releasing them into the bloodstream. This speeds up heart and breathing rates, and increases blood pressure and metabolism. These and other physical changes help us to react quickly and effectively under pressure.

This is known as the "stress response," or more commonly, as the "fight or flight response." But if even low levels of stress go on too long, it can be detrimental to one's health. The nervous system remains slightly activated and continues to pump out extra stress hormones over an extended period, leaving the person feeling depleted or overwhelmed, and weakening the body's immune system.

STRESS-REDUCING TIPS: There are several easy, practical things people can do to reduce the amount of stress in their lives. (1) Be realistic and don't try to be perfect, or expect others to be so. (2) Don't over-schedule; cut out an activity or two when you start to feel overwhelmed. (3) Get a good night's sleep. (4) Get regular exercise to manage stress -- just not excessive or compulsive exercise -- and follow a healthy diet. (5) Learn to relax by building time into your schedule for reading or a nice long bath.

Chelation Therapy Drug Found Safe and Beneficial for Children With Autism | Reuters

Chelation therapy is very effective for removing heavy metals from the body. Chelating agents such as DMSA bind with metals and are then excreted from the body. Heavy metal toxicity has been implicated as a cause of autism and is also associated with many other conditions .

What is very notable about this study is the dramatic effect of DMSA on the body's levels of glutathione. Glutathione is the body's most important anti-oxidant found in every cell. It's very powerful and effective but it's also easily depleted. When it becomes depleted you have less defense against the bad guys. A three day treatment of DMSA raised glutathione levels in children for 1-2 months duration.

Today it's even more important to think about getting garbage out of our system than what to put in. Heavy metals and other environmental toxins deplete glutathione and other antioxidant levels thus lowering the immune system. These toxins often have no metabolic pathway to be broken down and freely circulate through the blood stream or get stuffed into fat and joints. If you're chronically sick and cant' figure out why this could very well be the reason.

The Integrative Health Center offers lab testing for heavy metals and detoxification programs as part of the The 4R Program for good health.

Reflux esophagitis due to immune reaction, not acute acid burn

In an interesting study scientists have found that GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux, occurs not as a result of stomach acid burning the esophagus, but by a different mechanism. GERD spurs the release of cytokines which in turn attract inflammatory cells. Heartburn and chest pain are the typical symptoms.

What is not addressed is why there is GERD in the first place. Reflux can only occur due to a weak gastroesophageal sphincter. This is the muscle the closes off the stomach contents to the esophagus once food has entered. The gastroesophageal sphincter, like the whole body, is under control of the nervous system. If the nerve supply to the sphincter is impaired then the function of the sphincter will be impaired and acid can escape the stomach and go back up to the esophagus, triggering the release of inflammatory cytokines.

Chiropractic addresses this problem by going to the source, to the nerves that control the sphincters.

What do vaccinations contain?

Common chemical found to feminize boys' brains

Estrogenizing chemicals are now ubiquitous in our food supply and are causing boys brains to be feminized. But they are also a severe tax on the entire system, especially the liver and kidneys. There is no metabolic pathway for them to follow and be excreted so they are continually circulated throughout the body. As decades go by the effects can be cumulative, called bioload. More men are developing breasts and breast cancer for example. The main source of these chemicals is PVC plastics found almost everywhere, from food packaging to may household items.

Yet another reason to educate yourself on what you're up against regarding environmental pollutants and what you can do about it. Today a detox program is essential for every person right from the womb.

Researchers Explore Growing Ocean Garbage Patches - NYTimes.com

There's a garbage patch in the ocean twice the size of Texas!! Just ask any Texan and he'll tell you just how big that is. And that's only one of them! In some spots there's more plastic in a sample of water than there is water. Little fish eat the plastic, big fish eat the little fish, and we eat the big fish. What's wrong with a little plastic in the diet? For one, neuroendocrine disorders. See this link: http://www.webmd.com/erectile-dysfunction/news/20091111/study-high-bpa-linked-to-sex-issues-in-men?src=RSS_PUBLICThe end of the world as we know it......and I don't feel fine. We must always be doing what we can to detox in the face of such massive and pervasive environmental destruction.

NEW CHEMICAL TOOLKIT MANIPULATES MITOCHONDRIA, REVEALS INSIGHTS INTO DRUG TOXICITY

Mitochondria are the powerhouses of every cell. They turn our food into usable energy. Mitochondrial function can be disrupted by taking common prescription drugs which prevent mitochondria from communicating with the cell's nuclear genome.

Statins and blood pressure medications interfere with mitochondrial energy levels. This might explain the cause of muscle fatigue when taking these drugs.

Some drugs actually increase mitochondrial function and decrease toxic load. One of these compounds is found in Green Tea. That would explain why Green Tea has for a long time been anecdotally credited with normalizing blood sugar and increasing energy levels. Type 2 diabetes is associated with a decrease in mitochondrial genetic expression and may be helped by regularly drinking Green Tea.

Trigger for brain plasticity identified

Plasticity is the brain's ability to reform and rebuild as needed. External activities drive this mechanism. The best way to achieve plasticity is through new and challenging activities which require mental exertion. Crossword puzzles, learning a new language, or counting backwards are examples. Learning a new physical activity will also lead to greater plasticity. If you want a healthy brain as you age get moving and start something new!

Study Identifies Protein that Produces ‘Good’ Fat

Most people don't know there are actually two types of fat, white and brown. White fat is the notorious storage tissue most of wish we had less of. And then there's brown fat. The role of brown fat is to expend energy, thus burning fat! The bad news is that most adults no longer have brown fat. The good news is that the precursor to brown fat is still there and can be stimulated by a bone-inducing protein called BMP-7. BMP-7 drives precursor cells that give rise to mature brown fat cells.

According to the lead scientist on this study, “Diet and exercise are still the best approaches for weight reduction in the general population,” Tseng said. “However, for people who are genetically predisposed to obesity, these approaches may have very little effect.”

“As we learn more about the controls of brown fat development, medical interventions to increase energy expenditure by brown fat inducing agents, such as BMP-7, may provide hope to these individuals in losing weight and preventing the metabolic disorders associated with obesity,” she said.

"BOSTON – Aug. 20, 2008 – A study by researchers at the Joslin Diabetes Center has shown that a protein known for its role in inducing bone growth can also help promote the development of brown fat, a “good” fat that helps in the expenditure of energy and plays a role in fighting obesity."

Placebo effect is in the spine as well as the mind | Science | Reuters

I've always been perplexed at medicine's shunning of the placebo effect. It's the greatest proof that the mind can be trained to produce the greatest healing effects! Why treat placebo as an anomaly?? Every one of our 100 trillion cells contain memory and intelligence. Use the power!

ADHD medication turning children psychotic | News.com.au Top stories | News.com.au

There are much better way ways to deal with this. ADHD drugs fit like keys into brain receptors. When the drugs wear off a new dose is needed to fit into the lock. Exercise and specific brain friendly nutrients build new neural pathways and create more of the natural brain pharmaceuticals that the brain needs to function normally.

Your shower may be blasting you with germs: study | Lifestyle | Reuters

Your shower head is a breeding ground for Mycobacterium avium, which is linked to pulmonary disease. People with compromised immune function or with pulmonary problems such as asthma and COPD should especially beware of this. It may be a good idea to change the shower heads every few months or rotate two of them, letting one soak in a chlorine solution to kill the bacteria. Make sure to rinse the chlorine thoroughly before reinstalling.

Study Reveals How Much Cellphone Radiation You’re Getting | Gadget Lab | Wired.com

As cellphone use continues to increase, especially in younger people, the risks of brain cancers also increase. We have not yet seen large numbers of cases but many experts believe the next decade or two will see more people affected with chronic use. The best option for health is not to use a cell or cordless phone at all. Today that doesn't seem to be a realistic option. The next best options are minimizing talk time, using the speaker phone, or using an air tube wire to your ear.

Higher Cancer Rates In Under-18 Cell Phone Users - The Philadelphia Bulletin Archives

If you can't keep your kids away from cell phones, at least teach them how to use them more safely. Firstly, limit talk time to an absolute minimum. Are there plans that allow for only certain numbers like home and emergency? Use what's called an air tube instead of a wired ear piece.

A Simple Answer to a Medical Mystery

FOX CHANNEL 9 –The Rusten family of Minnesota can attest first hand to the benefits of pediatric chiropractic care. Evan Quinn Rusten was diagnosed with severe acid reflux, along with food allergies, and infant clubbed feet, among other conditions. The Rusten’s spent thousands of dollars a month on doctors appointments and prescriptions trying to find answers. After months of research, the Rusten’s went to the chiropractor. After the chiropractic adjustments all illnesses disappeared. The nervous system controls all the functions of our bodies infant and adult alike. Chiropractors are the only ones who can locate and correct these interferences in the nervous system. For the Rusten's this was an amazing transformation for the children; relief and hope for the parents.

Dr. McGrath's Corner

Underarm hygiene is a very important topic. Most of use antiperspirants which contain some form of aluminum, parabens, and petroleum products. In an effort to stay dry we are potentially subjecting ourselves to breast cancer. In my opinion it's better to be wet than sick and then dead. It's better to use a natural deodorant like the one I've recently discovered. It's always best to be informed about what you use on your body and what you put in your body!
